The Clean-Up Basket Trick: Reducing Cognitive Load and Making Transitions Easier

Clean-up time doesn’t have to feel like chaos.
At Braxy Speech Therapy, we’re all about finding ways to make everyday routines easier — for both the child and the adult.

Watch the video above to see how we use the “clean-up basket” to simplify transitions and support communication through play.

Why the Clean-Up Basket Works

For many kids — especially those with executive functioning challenges — “Clean up your toys!” is an overwhelming request.
It asks them to:

  • Plan where everything goes

  • Categorize items

  • Shift attention away from play

  • Sustain focus until the task is complete

That’s a lot of cognitive load for a little brain.

The clean-up basket removes that barrier. Instead of requiring organization, planning, or decision-making, the child has one clear, visual goal: “Everything goes in the basket.” No extra steps. No sorting. No overthinking.

The Power of Simplicity

When we lower the cognitive demands, we create space for success. The child can participate meaningfully, feel capable, and end on a positive note — while we, as adults, still get what we need (a clean space and an established routine).

It’s not about letting go of boundaries — it’s about building in success. We can “stick to our guns” and honor how the child’s brain works best.

Bonus: Built-In Communication Opportunities

  • Following simple directions: “In the basket!”

  • Core vocabulary: in, out, clean, full, empty

  • Turn-taking: “My turn, your turn.”

Try It This Week

  1. Grab a basket or bin — keep it simple.

  2. Model what to do, using short, clear language.

  3. Celebrate effort, not perfection: “You did it! Everything in the basket!”

It’s an easy shift that changes the tone of transition time — from stressful to successful, from compliance to collaboration.

Play with a Purpose. Reduce the Load. Build Success.
